Another 90km drive to from Daegwallyeong to Sokcho.
"Sokcho (속초) is a city in Gangwon-do province, South Korea. It is located in the far northeast of Gangwon-do. Lying north of the 38th parallel, the city belonged to North Korea from 1945 until the end of the Korean War, when the dividing line between the two Korean states was officially altered. Consequently, many of the population have relatives in North Korea."
Random beach in Sokcho
Entrance of Seoraksan mountain, another UNESCO site in Korea.
新 興 寺 Sinheungsa temple in Soraksan
This 10 meters high bronze statue is called Bronze Jwabul Statue.
Donation for new roof top, strangely most of them are donated by foreigners (mainly China), where are the ones from Korean?
Mountain pepper for sale
好山好水
Didnt go too far, only managed to trek 5km as seafood lunch is waiting for us!
"Located on the southern most point of Sokcho are the many raw fish restaurants and dried fish shops of Daepohang Port. This bustling port has become one of the most popular tourist spots for those in search of the freshest raw fish restaurants."
So many seafood vendors, we are spoiled for choice.
Market price in this market is 50,000won (60SGD) for 3 smallers snow crabs or 2 bigger snow crabs, we picked the later.
Service dish, some unknown seafood sashimi that taste crunchy sweet.
We could smell the sea behind us.
I wanted some add some fry dishes so we went out to get more food while our crab is steaming.
Mountain of tempura prawns
When in Sokcho must eat Abaisoondae where Abai is the name of a village in Sokcho.
Basically it is fried rice stuffed squid.
After 30 minutes, our snow crabs are ready! Restaurant owner even helped us to cut open everything, making it easy for us to eat. Yeah! :)
Eating crab the Korean way, mix crab roe with rice and sesame oil. If you have not done this, try it next time, so shiok.
Strolling along the port after our meal
Checking into our hostel "The House", recommended in my guide book. This hostel is managed by a pair of old couple with their son, they are very passionate, very warm and welcoming, made us feel like home. This place is also highly recommended by hostel world and trip adviser.
I like his wall of currency, cool stuff.
I think i paid around 35,000 won for the night, approximately 40SGD only!
나폴리아 Napolia, a cafe with a view, highly recommended by the hostel owner.
This place is so interesting...
View from 2nd floor of the cafe, breathtaking.
Explored around the cafe compound, this cafe is quite big. Looks like Sokcho is really near to DMZ, we also saw army soldiers patrolling next to the cafe.
This beach looked so different from the beach we saw in the morning.
Sokchoho River of Sokcho
The second recommended place to visit is 아바 Abai village.Abai village is founded after Korea war. Before the war, nobody stayed here, refugees from North Korea escape here thinking they can return when the war end.
Abai village beach is also where the drama Autumn in my heart filmed the last scene.
Store of the female lead in Autumn in my heart.
Crossing to the other side of the river 100won each, this boat operates without motor, brilliant.
The husband request this photo to be taken, this is a sample of the provision shop he remembered as a kid before leaving Korea.
Town market, so any Kimchi stores.
So many dead crabs, each pile only at 50,000won (60SGD).
Though Sokcho a fisherman port, strangely their market is famous for sweet and spicy fried chicken.
The original store, also mentioned in my guide book. We didnt try, they dont sell in small portion, each family size box is 20SGD.
Saving our stomach for the highlight of the day, 전복뚝배기 seafood hot pot dinner highly recommended in my guide book. They only operate from 10am to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm, come early as we saw them reject customers at 7.55pm.
Famous haemultang (seafood soup) with prawn, 2 fat abalones and all sort of clams. The portion is crazy for 18,000won or 22 SGD!
They only served one type of food here and no sharing is allowed, so a pot for me and hubby each. Portion is really generous, so be prepared.
My two abalone are still moving when the pot is served.
So much cheap and fresh seafood, we enjoyed coming to Sokcho.
